About:

Fake Market CAP ($CAP) is a conceptual artwork about the speculative crypto currency market and meme coins by Sterling Crispin. It is not an investment.

CAP has a fixed supply of 420,690,000 coins. Each time a coin transfers between a wallet or smart contract, the publicly reported total number of coins increases in an exponential fashion. Again, cap has a fixed supply but incorrectly reports an expanding supply.

If the price remains constant, the market cap for Fake Market Cap when calculated by this incorrect coin count, will exceed Bitcoin's market cap in several hundred transfers, and shortly thereafter the size of the entire US economy, the world economy, and then quickly climb past the number of observable stars in our universe.

In an effort to avoid any confusion, this coin is called Fake Market Cap.

Fake Market Cap is not an investment. CAP is provided as is, without warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this an investment?

A: No.

Q: Is there utility or a roadmap?

A: It's an artwork. The utility is that you should think about what it means, and observe how it makes you feel. The roadmap is that it simply exists.

Q: Why tho?

A: Fake Market Cap is an artwork and experimental smart contract as part of a series called Not Audited. The point of the series is to push the edge of what you might expect, either technically in it's execution, or simply through absurdity. It's similar to Wiiides, another project in the series that makes CryptoPunks get wider with every transfer.

Q: Is the market cap really (SOME BIG NUMBER)?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Why is SOME WEBSITE not updating the market cap very often?

A: It depends how often they check the coin supply. Most coins don't change supply this quickly, so the current market cap may be delayed on some websites.

Q: What was the initial distribution?

A: I pre-sold 10% of the supply via Twitter to people so I could gather enough ETH to make this happen. In total 73 people participated.

Q: Is this a financial investment?

A: No. It was always a social experiment and artwork.

Q: The market cap is so high! Should I buy this coin?

A: No.

Q: So what's the real market cap?

A: Multiply the price it's trading at by the real number of coins, which is 420,690,000.

Q: What is the max-fake-supply that it will increase to?

A: The maximum supply is one hundred fifteen octillion seven hundred ninety-two septillion eighty-nine sextillion two hundred thirty-seven quintillion three hundred twenty quadrillion six trillion one hundred thirty-four billion two hundred sixty-eight million six hundred twenty-four thousand ten coins. Although, in an effort to avoid a bug called integer overflow, the contract will stop short of this number at some point roughly in the same neighborhood.

Q: Has the contract been renounced?

A: Yes.

Q: This is not art. I think this is bad and I think you are a bad person.

A: That's not a question.

Q: Is the category of coherent sheaves some kind of abelian envelope of the category of vector bundles?

A: There can be no self-dual way to pass from the category of finitely generated projective modules to the category of all finitely generated modules (over, say, a Noetherian ring). Thus you cannot say that coherent sheaves are the "abelian envelope" of vector bundles; any construction of coherent sheaves from vector bundles must in some way care about which direction maps are going.

What Is Fake Market Cap ($CAP)?

Fake Market Cap is a conceptual artwork by Sterling Crispin that utilizes the ERC-20 coin standard to comment on the explosive and irrational nature of speculative digital assets. The supply is fixed, but with each trade it reports an expanding supply, thus causing the market cap to quickly exceed ETH, BTC, Tesla, Apple, the US economy, the global economy, and eventually the number of stars in the universe. It’s a manic up-only mechanism in a space that demands explosive growth.

It’s a mirror held up to society, reflecting our need for infinite growth and the way we arbitrarily assign value based on memetics. Fake Market Cap doesn't just question the value of meme coins, it questions the whole idea of value.

It's important to note that Fake Market Cap is not an investment opportunity or a typical utility token, it’s a conceptual artwork and social experiment. It's part of an artwork series titled Not Audited, which aims to challenge expectations and norms in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

What was the impact of Fake Market Cap ($CAP)?

Fake Market Cap launched Thursday May 11th in the early morning. The market cap started at 50k with a 10% growth rate of its fake market cap per trade. Its fake market cap exceeded Bitcoin in the first 40 minutes, and the real market cap was over $1M. In the first hour and a half the fake market cap was in the trillions, the real market cap was over $4M at the peak. In the first 12 hours it did $12M in volume.

This explosive financial response to the project is a bold exclamation point to the statement the artwork was presenting.

Why is it culturally relevant?

Fake Market Cap is a self-aware artwork about, and made of, meme coins. It’s about how society attaches value to culture and memetics. For example, Tesla's current market cap is more than Toyota, Daimler, Ford, GM, Volkswagen combined. It's fundamentally not worth that much, but people value Elon as a meme.

And everything is a meme. When I say meme, I mean the broad context. Not just images. But memetics as in the way that information spreads between people. The cultural version of genes. Christianity is a meme, an idea that spreads between generations and defends itself from other memes. A sandwich is a meme, the simple idea you can combine ingredients with bread. Bitcoin, and the US dollar, are memes. They are valued because people assign value to them and consensually agree on the value. People construct value based on how they perceive the information present.

Fake Market Cap is commenting on the explosive valuation of meme coins and crypto, by presenting absurdist info. A fake market cap in the quintillions. When billions of valuation are created "out of thin air" , when ShibaElonInu has a market cap larger than Deutsche Bank, you have to step back and ask yourself, "Is this real? What's going on?" And $CAP turns that up to 11 with a fake market cap beyond the global economy.

$CAP is in a historical lineage of conceptual art going back to the late 1950’s. One of the first is "Zone of immaterial pictorial sensibility" by Yves Klein. He sold empty space and gave a receipt in exchange for gold. The buyer could burn the receipt and he would throw half the gold into a river. It was made over 60 years ago and challenged how and why we assign value. Similar to NFTs, the certificate of authenticity is what held value, and the artwork was very ephemeral.

The artist Man Ray made "The Gift" in 1958, a readymade clothing iron made useless with spikes. He was a part of the Dadaist movement, artists using humor and antagonism to question the definition of artwork. Fake Market Cap also takes a readymade, the ERC-20 coin, and transforms it with a small change in the code, turning Fake Market Cap into something absurd, questioning how we define and assign value.

It's a surrealist object, but a digital one. $CAP is a self-conscious art coin that revels in and scrutinizes this juncture in our cultural history.

The abstract expressionists in the 40s and 50s were making paintings about painting. What would a painting look like that embodied paint, that no other medium could represent? Likewise, Fake Market Cap is an artwork about meme coins, that also is one. The medium is the message and its message is an embodiment of the entire meme coin phenomenon.

Fake Market Cap isn't a lie or empty promise. $CAP isn't selling a narrative that it's the future of finance. It's a consensual fiction that's making fun of, and having fun with, this volatile space. It's honest in its fakeness and ends up being more real than 99.9% of coins.
